We begin our adventure in central Auckland where you will meet your enthusiastic guides and your new travelling companions! Once we’re all sorted we’ll get underway and make the short drive toward the west coast, on the way you’ll get to know your guides and your fellow travellers. We’ll soon arrive at the stunning Muriwai Beach where we will explore the black sand beach and a permanent Australasian Gannet colony, giant seabirds that can grow a wingspan close to 2m across! If you’re lucky it may be breeding season or there may be chicks being raised at the colony, from there we also can check out the neighbouring beach, Maori Bay. We will then carry on north, stopping in at the picturesque Kai Iwi Lakes to catch some sun and jump in for a swim if you’re feeling like a dip! We will then make the short drive to our accommodation for the night, where there is an opportunity to do a guided night walk to see New Zealand’s iconic flightless bird, the Kiwi!
Stay: Kauri Coast - lunch and dinner included
This morning we will visit Tane Mahuta, ‘Lord of the Forest’, this impressive giant is New Zealand’s largest living Kauri tree, Tane Mahuta is a significant cultural icon to New Zealand and our indigenous Maori people. With a trunk girth of 13.7m (41ft) and a height of over 51m (152ft) it is a sight to behold! From here we will carry on north to Opononi to board a water taxi and explore the stunning, unspoiled golden sand beaches and throw ourselves down giant sand dunes on sand boards for those feeling adventurous! After we’ve had our fill we will travel to the world-famous Bay of Islands. 144 islands form this area and create an incredible natural seascape that cannot be missed, you'll have your first opportunity to explore it yourselves with an evening cruise on the R. Tucker Thompson, a historic tall ship that operates from the beautiful town of Russell (the R. Tucker Thompson only operates from 29th Oct - 15th April).
Stay: Paihia - all meals included
Today we spend our time exploring the bay of Islands on board a 50ft sailing catamaran, a relaxing day cruise where you will stop on some of the untouched island beaches and have a chance to explore with your pick of scenic walks. You will also have a chance to enjoy a swim or go for a snorkel, you may even get to swim with the resident pod of dolphins! The vessel has a permit to swim with the dolphins so if you see the dolphins during the day and the conditions allow you may well hop in for a swim with them. Today we also offer an alternative, if boating is not your thing or you would love to see Cape Reinga, one of New Zealand’s iconic northern points, you can take a scenic fly/drive tour to see it (details are on the next page).
Bay of Islands during winter (1st May – 31st August)
During winter the full day sailing trip does not operate so instead we head out for a half day adventure to the famous hole in the rock off Cape Brett. Along the way you can search for dolphins, if you spot the resident pod you are able to jump in for a swim with them when the conditions allow! You voyage through the myriad of beautiful islands and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Bay of Islands. The alternative Cape Reinga fly/drive is still available year-round.
